This week, Volvo staged a publicity stunt which went wrong. At a press demo, the collision avoidance system on the new S60 failed to stop it ploughing into the back of a truck. This can be seen on You Tube, along with some great attempts by the poor PR bloke. On the positive side, even though there were no occupants, the safety cell clearly did its job protecting the passenger compartment.
I think this failure should be celebrated, for it reminds us not to rely on computers and that we need to pay attention to the road ahead. If you drive into something, it’s probably wholly or partly your fault. Even if there’s a collision avoidance system, is the road too wet, your tyres too bald or your speed too fast?Tweet
